What is skilled nursing care?

Skilled nursing care is different from basic nursing care in that it usually involves more complicated medical tasks and requires a higher level of training and expertise. These services are typically provided to patients recovering from an illness or needing long-term, 24-hour care by licensed nurses who work in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) or nursing home.  Skilled nursing care plays a crucial role in improving patients’ health outcomes and quality of life.

When and what is National Skilled Nursing Care Week?

It’s been a tradition since the late 1960s and continues to this day – National Skilled Nursing Care Week (NSNCW) is celebrated each year starting on Mother’s Day to recognize all the contributions skilled nursing care centers and staff have on the lives of residents and their families. This year, Skilled Nursing Care Week will be held from May 12 – 18, 2024, starting right as Nurses Week is ending.

What is the theme for National Skilled Nursing Care Week 2024?

According to the American Health Care Association (AHCA), the 2024 theme for National Skilled Nursing Care Week is, “Radiant Memories: A Tribute to the Golden Age of Radio.” AHCA says residents and staff at skilled nursing centers bring to life radiant memories as they recall stories and experiences from their lifetimes, similar to the radiant memories created when radio broadcasts would play popular music, presidential fireside chats, dramas, and more in the ‘Golden Age of Radio.’

Celebrating National Skilled Nursing Care Week

AHCA encourages skilled nursing facilities nationwide to participate in celebrating National Skilled Nursing Care Week by sharing stories, pictures, and videos from workers, residents, and volunteers on social media with the hashtags #NSNCW and #RadiantMemories. Whether it is listening to residents recall experiences from their childhoods or highlighting a nurse who provides compassionate care, there are easy ways for all to join in recognizing National Skilled Nursing Care Week!
